El príncipe Luis Hermann Alejandro Clodoveo de Hesse-Del Rin nació el 20 de noviembre de 1908 como segundo hijo del Gran Duque Ernesto Luis de Hesse-Del Rin (25 de noviembre de 1868-9 de octubre de 1937) y su segunda esposa, la Gran Duquesa Leonor (17 de septiembre de 1871-16 de noviembre de 1937; de soltera Solms-Hohensolms-Lich). Luis se unió a un hermano mayor, el Gran Duque Heredero Jorge Donato (8 de noviembre de 1906-16 de noviembre de 1937). Del primer matrimonio de su padre con la Princesa Victoria Melita de Sajonia-Coburgo-Gotha (1876-1936), Luis tuvo una media hermana, la Princesa Isabel (1895-1903), a quien nunca conoció debido a su prematura muerte.

Junto con su hermano Georg Donatus, dos años mayor, el príncipe Ludwig creció alternativamente en el Schloss Wolfsgarten y en el Neuen Palais de Darmstadt. En la época de la Primera Guerra Mundial, comenzó a recibir clases particulares. Ludwig, en el círculo familiar llamado "Lu", fue educado casi exclusivamente en casa, al igual que su hermano. Ludwig terminó sus estudios primarios en 1926. Después, Ludwig estudió arqueología e historia del arte con especialización en ornamentación en las universidades de Darmstadt, Lausana y Múnich.

Tras graduarse, el historiador de arte de profesión trabajó como agregado en la embajada alemana en Londres. En la Alta Baviera, Ludwig conoció a Margaret Campbell Geddes (18 de marzo de 1913-26 de enero de 1997), hija del diplomático y profesor británico Sir Auckland Campbell Geddes (1879-1954) y de la estadounidense Isabella Gamble Ross (1881-1962). Tras haberse conocido en 1936, Ludwig y Margaret anunciaron su compromiso el 16 de julio de 1937. La boda se pospuso tras la muerte del gran duque Ernst Ludwig el 9 de octubre de 1937. En ese momento, se decidió que Ludwig y Margaret se casarían el 20 de noviembre de 1937, el día en que el novio cumplía veintinueve años.
However, further tragedy was to intervene. On 16 November, Eleonore, along with her son Georg Donatus, his pregnant wife Cecilie and his two sons, went to London by plane in order to attend Ludwig’s wedding. The plane crashed near Oostende in Belgium and all the passengers were killed. The only one of Georg Donatus and Cecilie’s children not aboard the flight was their daughter Johanna.
In London, it was decided that Prince Ludwig and Margaret Geddes should marry without delay in the face of this loss. The couple were married on 17 October 1937, a day after the plane crash, in quiet wedding ceremony at St Peter’s Church, Eaton Square. Ludwig’s best man was Lord Louis Mountbatten. The wedding was attended by the Duke and Duchess of Kent, Princess Olga of Yugoslavia (née Greece), Countess Elisabeth of Törring-Jettenbach (née Greece), the Dowager Marchioness of Milford Haven, Lady Louis Mountbatten, and Mr and Mrs von Ribbentrop. After the marriage, Ludwig and Margaret traveled to Ostend to see the remains of the groom’s family. Ludwig never completely recovered from the death of his family; it was later remarked that “a disciplined sadness marked him.”

After the accident, Prince Ludwig and Princess Margaret adopted Johanna, their orphaned niece, and planned to raise her as their own daughter. Sadly, Johanna developed meningitis and died twenty months later at the age of two and a half on 14 June 1939. The little girl’s maternal grandmother, Princess Alice of Greece (née Battenberg), said later that the unconscious Johanna so closely resembled her mother at the same age that it felt like losing her daughter Cecilie all over again. Following Johanna’s death, she was buried with her parents and brothers at the Rosenhöhe.

Prince Ludwig and Princess Margaret “Peg” were never able to have children of their own. After the end of World War II, the couple engaged in the reconstruction of Darmstadt, supporting such institutions as Alice Hospital, the Eleonorenheim and the Red Cross. As a lover of classical music, the prince promoted the Ansbach Festival and the Aldeburgh Festival. As a friend of the British musician Benjamin Britten, Ludwig translated his lyrics and invited the English composer come to Wolfsgarten, where parts of Britten’s opera Death in Venice were created.

En 1964, Ludwig se convirtió en uno de los padrinos del príncipe Eduardo, hijo menor de la reina Isabel II y del duque de Edimburgo. Ludwig murió en 1968 a la edad de 59 años. El funeral tuvo lugar el 6 de junio de 1968 en Darmstadt en presencia de la realeza y la aristocracia europeas. Ludwig está enterrado junto con su esposa Margaret (1913-1997) en una tumba sencilla en Rosenhöhe, en las inmediaciones de sus padres y la familia de su hermano.  |

En 1960, el Príncipe Luis adoptó al Príncipe/Landgraf Moritz de Hesse-Kassel (1926-2013), en cuya persona se reunieron por primera vez desde 1567 las dos líneas separadas de la Casa de Hesse después de la muerte del Príncipe Luis en 1968.
